The Fleetwood Community Hall was built in the 1930s and still operates today at the corner of 84th Avenue and 160th Street, across from the Fleetwood Community Centre, which opened in 1995. Volunteer labour was used to originally create the beautiful 120-acre Fleetwood Park (one of the many parks in Fleetwood as indicated by the green on the map), located on 80th Avenue, between 156th and 160th Streets which today is home to Fleetwood Gardens, Playground, Water Park, Picnic Area, Washrooms, Sports Field, Ball Diamonds, Games Courts, Tennis Courts, Valleyball Courts and Natural Area Trails. Fleetwood is for the most part a residential community with great parks and the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex centrally located on Fraser Highway. What an amazing complex.
Named for Arthur Thomas (Tom) Fleetwood, who died of his battle wounds on September 8, 1917 while fighting in France as a member of the 47th Canadian Infantry Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, Fleetwood's rapid population growth began in the 1970's and brought with it retail, commercial and multi-family residential developments. Residents turned down attempts to develop light industrial properties preserving it's community. A branch of the Surrey Public Library, the Fleetwood Library and Community Centre, serves the local neighbourhood. The main commercial center is at the intersection of Fraser Highway and 152nd Street and branches out along both streets. 1996 Census Profile of Fleetwood.
